Summer evening thunderstorms

Thursday, June 27, 2013

I can think of only a few things that are better than summer evening thunderstorms. We've been having a steady line of them every evening this week. Most of the time there’s no rain, just heavy rolling clouds with lightning cracking through them and, following it, a rumble of impressive thunder. Have you ever noticed how every rumble of thunder is different? Some make a sharp cracking noise, while others just sound like an old man belching. Last night I stood on the deck for awhile, listening to the thunder growling. The sky was a dark blue and, in the distance, the clouds turned into streaks where the rain was coming down. The air feels so good when a summer storm is rolling in. And the mosquitoes disappear for a few hours -- which makes summer evening thunderstorms even more awesome.
