Sweet summer nights

One of the downfalls of working 9-5 is spending so many of your days surrounded by four walls and air conditioning. It's a small price to pay really, considering I'm lucky enough to have a job and one that has an air conditioned office at that! But, still, I can't help but crave the outdoors when I get off work. I want to breathe in this humid Virginia summer and hear bugs chirping and, yes, I'll even take a few mosquito bites if it means I can spend some time outside.

In an effort to get outside one evening, Mark and I set off in the car -- windows rolled down, music turned up, going nowhere. We took a few turns that we'd never taken before and ended up pulling off at a little spot on the James called Pony Pastures. Finding spots like this is one of the things I really like about Richmond. As long as we've been living here, this city still has surprises.

I know I'm probably the last person in Richmond to discover Pony Pastures, but it has become our new favorite spot. After our first night there, we've gone back several times with a picnic supper to soak up the sun's rays until it sinks below the trees. We had a couple friends come as well and they brought along some Sugar Shack doughnuts which makes any evening better!

There are no ponies at Pony Pastures, but there are lots of large granite walks that make a pretty nice perch to watch the sun go down. I know the pumpkin spice latte talk will start up soon enough. Fall is just around the corner, but for now I'm planning on soaking up every last bit of summer that I can.

    1. Oh, cool! You need to stop in sometime. There are a lot of great spots around Richmond. I always said I didn't want to live here my whole life, but the longer we're here the more I grow attached to this little city! :)
