How to feel like an expert

Confidence is something I think we all struggle with now and then. I've always been of the "Fake it 'till you make it" mindset, but lately it feels like I'm doing a lot of "faking it" and hoping no one calls me out on it. That's why I loved reading Kathleen Shannon's post this week on how to feel like an expert. Not how to be an expert, but how to feel like one. We all know how you get to be an expert -- study your butt off, practice a lot, practice some more, and then keep on learning. But just gaining the status of expert doesn't mean the feeling will follow. It's not a feeling of being cocky, necessarily, just a feeling of confidence in one's work, abilities, and opinions. Kathleen shared so many great tips in her post and, although she's mostly talking about how to feel like a creative expert, a lot of what she says can apply to feeling like an expert in any field. Here are some of my favorite take-aways from her post:

"Being a creative expert doesn't mean being the smartest person in the room." 

"Experts don't know (or do) it all and they aren't afraid to say it."

"Experts don't get bent out of shape, defensive, or riled up when they receive criticism - and on the flip side they don't get too excited or inflated by positive feedback or big wins."

"Experts have enough experience to have a point-of-view - they have meaningful opinions and aren't afraid to speak on them."

"Being an expert means knowing when to pause and learn more, and knowing when to be confident in the moment and share what you know to be true, because of your own experiences doing the work - not just defending it."
