When summer rolls around, I have an essential wardrobe item that goes with me everywhere and it's not your classic summer item. Summer in the South means intense heat and humidity for long periods of time — something this cold-blooded girl loves. It also means public places like offices, stores, and restaurants have their air conditioning cranked to subarctic temperatures. Enter the handy, lightweight summer sweater. Not only do they work well for chilly restaurants, but they also come in handy after being in the sun for long periods of time.

Side-note: Do you know why you always feels cold after getting a sunburn? The way our bodies work is so weird and so awesome at the same time.

I recently picked up another summer sweater at Gap and it's been a constant in my bag ever since. Nothing ruins a night out like shivering in your sandals and shorts, so I usually always have some kind of extra layer to pull on when I get cold.

A few important factors about the perfect summer sweater

1. Oversized is best — after all, it is still incredibly hot outside. Anything that is too clingy is a no-go.
2. Look for breathable, lightweight materials. Again, it is the middle of summer so merino wool is probably not what you're looking for.
3. You can never go wrong with stripes.
