5 Things to Watch This Weekend

Friday, November 11, 2016

The weather has turned chilly and, now that it's getting dark at 6pm, nothing feels better than curling up on the couch for a long evening with a good movie or show to dive into. Here are a few shows and movies we've been into lately.

Amanda Knox Documentary (Netflix) - I remember hearing the name Amanda Knox floating around when this true story took place and knew the general details of the case, but that was about it. Netflix really knows how to knock true-story crime documentaries out of the park (remember last November's obsession with Making a Murderer?) so I decided to give this one a go as well and was instantly hooked. The show dives into different aspects of the French investigation that I never knew about and really makes you wonder what if this was me?! At one point in the show, Amanda Knox says, "Either I'm a psychopath in sheep's clothing or I am you." That's what got me (in this show and Making a Murderer). Go watch it so we can discuss theories!

Good Girls Revolt (Amazon Prime) - I'm recommending this show to everyone I know. It's so good! It's set in the late 1960s at a magazine called News of the Week. The women at the magazine perform all the roles of actual reporters, except they're called 'researchers', paid significantly less, and not allowed to have a byline. They band together to bring a lawsuit against the magazine that changes everything. Of all of these shows, this was by far my favorite. I hope there'll be another season soon!

This Is Us (NBC) - I probably don't need to introduce this show, since it's the only one anyone is talking about these days. And Jess from Gilmore Girls is one of the main characters. Need I say more?

Timeless (NBC) - It's rare that Mark and I find a show that we both like to watch, but this one fit the bill. It's a show about time travel, which normally would be a little too sci-fi for my liking, but it asks some really interesting questions. Like if we had the ability to go back and change history (save the Alamo, prevent WWII, stop John Wilkes Booth), would the world today really be better?  It also delves into how one tweak to history changes so much in our world today. If one person from history is eliminated, then that person doesn't have children who go on to have more children who go on to invent amazing things for our country. It's like this cool mind-boggling circle of ethics versus history.

The Night Manager (Amazon Prime) - I mainly decided to watch this one since Hugh Laurie (aka House) is one of the main characters. It's got a very James Bond-esque feel to it: bad guys, a beautiful woman (who ends up getting killed), Swiss Alps, British accents, etc. Great for a cozy night on the couch!
