Richmond Restaurant Adventures

Wednesday, December 20, 2017

I was in Richmond for a few days last week for work and got to try several new-to-me restaurants around the city, plus some old favorites. I even got to experience the first snowfall of the season which was the icing on the cake.

When we lived in Richmond, I majorly took for granted how many incredible restaurants there are around the city. A new one seems to be opening each time I visit! This trip, I tried the new Chopt in Willow Lawn, Laura Lee's in Forest Hill, Garnett's in the Fan, Fat Dragon in the Museum District and Urban Farmhouse in Scott's Addition. I wasn't trying to hit all the Richmond neighborhoods, but somehow it worked out that way.

This was obviously a big detour from my usual eating habits, but I looked at it as a way to put my food freedom to practice. I ate what I really wanted and stopped eating when I was full. It also meant I was a lot more mindful of what I ate which made the experience all that more enjoyable.

This little cafe is across the street from my old college apartment, so I swung by one day for lunch more out of nostalgia than anything else. I ordered the Dutch Aunt sandwich - cheese, bacon, tomato, and caramelized onions on grilled rye - and took a stroll around my old neighborhood while eating lunch.

This was my first time trying Chopt and the best part was watching their process. I ordered the Mexican Goddess salad (dressing on the side) which was delicious, but I was also very hungry and wanted more carbs than that one piece of bread. Still a good choice if you're looking for a fun place to take out-of-town guests or a light lunch.

Laura Lee's
I was so excited about trying this place and it didn't disappoint. The ambiance was adorable and my sister and I spent a few hours eating our way through the menu. I ordered the pasta carbonara which was insanely good. Topped off with lemon chess pie and good conversation, it's a night I wouldn't mind repeating.

The Urban Farmhouse Market & Cafe
Somehow I'd missed out on this Richmond classic for the years I lived there, so we remedied that by visiting their new Scott's Addition location for lunch. It was snowing outside so I was in the mood for something warm to stick to my bones. I went with the broccoli cheddar soup and Cuban sandwich. Both delicious!
