January: The Monday of The Year

Monday, January 29, 2018

Oh January, you've been a doozy. We started the month off right, but it quickly went downhill when both Mark and I caught the flu. It was the first time either of us has had it and it was no joke! We pretty much slept constantly for five days straight, only getting out bed to get each other more liquids and whatever we could stomach at the moment. Needless to say, Whole30 was completely ditched while we went into pure survival mode for that week.

Luckily, we started feeling better but I came out of that week with absolutely no motivation and I've been struggling to find it ever since. The thought of starting Whole30 over again made me want to crawl back under the covers. I've had no desire to cook and my willpower is at an all-time low. My workouts were forgotten as I struggled to walk up a flight of stairs without running out of breath and my goal to read more books was put on pause as I pulled another blanket over me and binged on Netflix instead.

I've been frustrated with myself for feeling this way. I know the things that make me feel better but have no motivation to actually do them. Someone recently wrote a post about winter that resonated so strongly with me. They pointed out that winter is a time when everything slows down — plants die, trees stop blooming, animals go into hibernation, and us humans just keep barreling full-speed ahead.

It's no wonder that the motivation starts to run out after a little while. I'm constantly reminding myself that it's okay to just roll with the punches during this time of the year. January is like the Monday of the year and everyone knows you shouldn't try to fit too many things into a Monday. I'm slowly getting my groove back, but trying to let go of the guilt in the meantime.

Is anyone else out there struggling with the January vibes?

  1. January was the longest, most painful month in a long, long time.

I'm glad you are feeling better! And honestly, kudos to you for even staying remotely on track with your eating during your home renovation. I would be eating Chipotle every night, so I'd say you're killing it.
